S2 E10: Something About Conspiracy Theories
This week on Something Will Happen, Melissa and Emily are together again to dive into a well known Beatles conspiracy. Emily shares her research into the “Paul is Dead” body-double theory.
The story begins in November of 1966. Allegedly, after a long day of recording, Paul met his untimely end in a car crash on his way home from the studio. Distraught and afraid for their careers, the remaining members decide to replace Paul with a man that had recently won a Paul McCartney lookalike contest. The plan was to continue on with the body double, and no one would be the wiser.
Shortly after implementing their plan, John, George, and Ringo became filled with guilt over the secret they carried. This guilt allegedly led the three of them to leave a series of clues and easter eggs hidden throughout their work to tell the world the truth about Paul McCartney. These clues included lyrics which hinted at the tragedy, secret messages found when playing certain records backwards, and imagery in their art and promotional material.
Melissa and Emily discuss their opinions on the theory. They share quotes from the Beatles themselves on the issue and discuss an article written by Beatles historian, Bruce Spizer. Check out the research, listen to the hidden messages, and decide for yourself what they were trying to tell us!
